Heilongjiang: Harbin and Qiqihaer
In
July, 2005 I spent a long weekend in Harbin, the capital of China's
northeastern most province of Heilongjiang, and Qiqihaer,
Heilongjiang's second city. Harbin is famous for its winter Ice Lantern
Festival, but it has summer charms as well, incuding a thronging river
promenade. Among the surreal attractions we visited were Harbin's
Siberian Tiger park, where, for modest sums of money you can arrange
for various domestic animals to be hurled to the tigers, and the
Zhalong nature reserve near Qiqihaer. Zhalong is a wetland popular with
migrating cranes, and is the only distinguishing thing about Qiqihaer,
otherwise known as a military manufacturing center. But what we mostly
saw were captive cranes and wild Chinese tourists. And a refreshingly
tourist-free nearby village. It was good fun.
