Laos
I went to Laos
in late 2001. It struck me as being like most of the rest of Southeast
Asia might have been thirty years ago. The boom years of the Asian Tigers
had drifted right past Laos, and left it isolated from all but backpackers
and Thai tourists.
I spent time
in Vientianne and Luang Prabang, travelling between the two via a nerve-wracking
ride on a Chinese Yunshuji-7 aircraft that sqeaked and groaned like a
flying schoolbus. It was worth the journey.
When you're in
Vientianne, get out of the backpacking district and wander around a bit.
You don't have to go far in any direction to be in completely local territory.
One of my best evenings was at a kickboxing tournament with only three
foreigners in the audience: me, my father, and someone who appeared to
be some kind of dignitary.
