Lombok
One of the first
excursions I made in Southeast Asia was to Lombok, Indonesia. Lombok is
Bali's obscure, eastern neighbor. In two visits I found Lombok to be sleepy
and gorgeous, and the people hospitable and friendly. Outside of the hustle-filled
tourist area of Senggigi I was often invited into people's homes and engaged
in curious conversation. Bali has its legendary charms, but, if you have
the opportunity, Lombok is well worth a visit too.
I suggest hiring
a car and driver in Lombok and exploring the island, but have your own
itinerary set. Otherwise you will simply be shepherded through a succession
of gift shops and tourist markets.
