Sulawesi
Several years
ago spent a week on an impromptu live-aboard among the seldom-dived islands
offshore from the southern Sulawesi provincial capital of Makassar (Ujung
Pandang). The diving was average, but the sense of isolation and adventure
was splendid. Deep walls, a shallow reef coated in Chinese porcelain (mostly
broken), wrecked Japanese destroyers and more. Topside shots are of a
dead juvenile sperm whale (note teeth removed by local villagers) and
a hookah fishing boat on which four Indonesian fishermen were living,
three days sail from Makassar.
